Each of the students in Gretchen Henderson’s Introduction to Creative Writing class chose a spot in Dahlgren Quad from which to write haiku throughout the fall 2015 semester. The following haiku are by Mandy Brouillard, Tatiana Lebreton, and Patricja Okuniewska from “spot 5.” Click through to see the metadata for each haiku or to browse more spot 5 haiku.

~Mandy Brouillard~
Oh dead little leaf,
on whose shoe where you carried
to this very spot?
***
The light bathes the air,
Searching for creases, cobwebs.
These walls have stories.
***
Dark hallway of stone;
It knows of whispered prayer and
Music of daytime.
***
Goodbye, odd strangers:
The bug has gone, shades are drawn,
The moment has passed.
***
I think I will stay
Under this roof, watching rain
Pour down from the sky.
***
~Tatiana Lebreton~
Vivid red on leaves.
Colored light across a page.
Calm blue of the shade.
***
A white dress under rain.
Moods that refuse to dampen,
As the bells strike. Noon?
***
Light filtering through
Stained glass ever so gently
Chimes in the distance.
***
Chorus of voices
Thrown into pleasant night
— Crickets are singing.
***
A group has gathered.
Small-talk permeates the air.
The angels appraise.
***
~Patricja Okuniewska~
A lost history
its found again in these walls.
The bricks hold secrets
***
The green of the land,
we will do our best to honor.
These things were us.
***
A streak of color,
Otherwise, darkness surrounds
Many stained angels.
***
A silent breeze comes
Crosses the threshold and then–
Gone as fast as it–
