“Things will fall apart,”
Says the tree shedding its leaves.
Arresting wreckage.

***

A tree overturned,
Now dead, lies beside the trench
History repeats.

***

A breeze blows gently,
Shadows flicker wildly:
The rustle of leaves.

***

Cool darkness is now
Broken. Blinding light on
An empty canvas.
